Description
Photographing the Musk Ox in winter time remains one of the most physically challenging trips I do. When I first started this project, crazy as it may seem, I would ascend to over 2,000 meters (6,000 feet) above sea level on foot, daily, just to spend time with these Nordic icons. Wanting to capture the forever changing conditions of the mountains, I decided that wild camping was the only option. With windchill down to -30°C (-22°F), it wasn’t easy.
In Europe, Norway is the only place you can see these magnificent bovine. Despite best efforts, their population remains in the low hundreds. Weighing up to 400kg, the males challenge each other for dominance and breeding rights, by charging at high speed and clashing heads. As they can run surprisingly fast, this skull-crunching clash is quite a heart-stopping sight to experience. In this image, the young male on the right was nudging the older established bull to gauge his potential chances of success in the joust.
