Description
Contrary to popular belief, the bright middle part of the day is the most difficult to work in. The harsh light produces a strong contrast that reduces the detail in shaded spots and overly brightens sunlit areas. I had been following this magnificent Red Deer stag all morning. He was challenged by two others but won the fight on both occasions. Naturally he was somewhat tired by late morning and decided to take a rest. I made use of the normally unworkable light to my advantage by framing him against a distant woodland that was in the shade. By slightly underexposing to tone down the overall image, the background was rendered almost in black, giving a wonderful graphic outline of this majestic stag.
