Description
Orangutan literally means ‘Man of the Forest’ in the native language of Malay. I have photographed all three sub-species of this great ape from the island of Borneo. This young male was forging his own territory by asserting his dominance by challenging the reigning male. I took this portrait of him right after he has eaten and was having a moment of rest. It is clear from the intelligence in his glance that we are very closely related. A recent paper in the Journal of Biography pointed out that Orangutans share more human traits than Bonobos and Chimpanzees, whom we share 99% of our DNA with.
This is one of a set of three prints entitled “Primates”, where the proceeds support the conservation of this species and other primates.
